The Start Backup Online Backup Manager has been developed in Java making it compatible with major operating systems.
Currently the operating systems are supported:
What are the hardware requirements?
The computer to be backed up must meet the following hardware requirements: Memory: 265mb (Recommended)
*When the backup takes place it copies the data to a temporary directory so you will need to have free space equivalent to the amount of data to be backed up.
What connection speed is required? It is recommended that you have a broadband ADSL link with a minimum upload speed of 256mbps to use this service.
Due to the amount of data being transmitted it is not suited to dial up connections.
Do I need a subscription for each computer / server? The Start Backup Service is based on the amount of disk space required to store your data on our servers. Once you have created an account you can back up as many computers as you wish. Please click here to download the how to Backup to Multiple Computers Guide. <Multiplecomputers.pdf>
How much storage do I require? The amount of capacity required will depend on the amount of data you want to store. To work out the capacity you require on Windows
Although the data is compressed on our server to approximately 50% of the original size it is recommended that you order enough capacity to store the current data on your computer(s) uncompressed. This is to allow you to store copies of the data from multiple points in time - the retention period. For more information on retention period please refer to user manual.
Is my data secure? We take security of your data very seriously. All data is encrypted on your local computer before being transmitted to our data centre via HTTPS. The key used to encrypt your data never leaves your computer Start Backup Services personnel do not have access to your data or your encryption key. For more information click here. (Links to the security page on the website.)
How do I know that my data is backed up? You receive a detailed email after every backup job is run confirming a full list of files that have been backed up and detailing any errors. The system will also email you if you miss a backup.
What can I backup? You can backup any file stored on your computer, standard documents including spreadsheets, letters, pictures, movies and other data can all be backed up. The software can also backup:
Microsoft SQL Database files
What is In-file delta? Once the first backup has been successfully carried out all subsequent backups use In-File delta to backup only the changes in each file. This ensure that backups are kept as small as possible ensuring that they run as quickly as possible. For more information on In-File delta please click here. <In-file delta.pdf>
Can I backup open files? It is always best to ensure that all open files are closed before running a backup. This is not always possible – using Microsoft Volume shadow copy open files can be backed up while they are open. This is great for applications such as Outlook with PST files. For databases and Microsoft Exchange the backup software is supplied with special modules to ensure that these files are backed up correctly. |
